What is Service of Legal<\/a> Process<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

In its simplest terms, service of process is the procedure by which a party<\/a> to a legal<\/a> action<\/a> gives appropriate “notice<\/a>”<\/strong> of a legal<\/a> action<\/a> to a person<\/a> or entity<\/a> (such as a defendant<\/a>, respondent, or witness). The legal<\/a> action<\/a> may<\/a> be in a court or administrative body of some type. The purpose of service is to allow the court or administrative body to exercise jurisdiction<\/a> over that person<\/a> or entity<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Notice<\/a>”<\/strong> is given by delivering a set of legal<\/a> documents (called “process”) to the person<\/a> or entity<\/a> being served. The manner in which notice<\/a> is given varies widely from state to state. The courses offered here are specific to the rules of service in Washington State.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
